AirPods Pro: What to do if an earphone crackles | WatchGeneration
AirPods Pro owners complain of sound discomfort with one of their headphones (often the left, sometimes the right). The key, a replacement by Apple of the offending earphone or the complete pair.
When publishing an article about receiving one of these replacement earphones, some of our readers had witnessed the same symptom: a kind of crackling or at least an abnormal noise. It can occur in transparency mode as well as in noise reduction.
On Twitter, a discussion started yesterday on this subject. Here again users say they have obtained a complete exchange or one of the headphones. In Apple's forums there are posts that suggest similar situations (1, 2, 3), as well as on Reddit (1, 2, 3). Conversely, none of those who have these AirPods Pro at MacG have yet noticed this noise.
If this problem occurs, before contacting Apple, check if the defective earphone is clean. It sounds simplistic as a solution, but with previous AirPods we have already had the case where the sound was completely muffled, to the point of wondering if the earphone was not dead. Ultimately, after a good brush stroke in the Apple Store, he had regained all his energy (see also AirPods: accessory guide and maintenance tips). This is a case unfortunately well known to technicians in the Apple Store (who do not taste having to clean the earwax of customers…).
The AirPods Pro being completely different from previous AirPods, in particular with their tips and membranes, it is not impossible that the inevitable accumulation of dirt will end up causing undesirable effects.
However, some users complained very soon after their purchase that this problem appeared. Maybe there is something else in this case. So inspect your headphones first, and if they seem clean, all that remains is to contact Apple.
