Ghana: launch of an yam processing plant and cassava of $ 1.6 million

(Ecofin agency) - In Ghana, roots and tubers are essential for the food of populations.If they are not in the spotlight like cocoa, they nevertheless display an important potential for the creation of added value in the agricultural sector.

In Ghana, a male and cassava processing unit was put into service on September 9 by President Nana Akufo-Addo in Krachi East in the Oti region.At a cost of 10 million CEDIS ($ 1.6 million), the unit called "CH Global Limited" was funded by Ghana Exim Bank.

It has an operational time transformation line of 120 tonnes of yams into chips and dumplings, a treatment potential of 216,000 tonnes of tubers per year.In its second phase of development which will start in 2022, the factory will see the integration of a line having a transformation capacity of 700 tonnes of cassava per hour in fries and snacks.

Overall, according to the authorities, the installation will obtain raw materials from a 40 hectare cassava and yam plantation as well as a network of producers in the region.The initiative which is part of the government program "One District-One Factory (1D1F)" should generate more than 300 direct and indirect jobs in total.

In Ghana, cassava and yam are among the most important food crops.They occupy almost 20 % of the cultivated agricultural area and the total commercial value of their production exceeds that of all cereal crops according to FAO data.
