IDBOOX IDBOOX realme GT Master Edition Test – Power and versatility for 300€

The realme GT Master Edition comes to expand the GT range with an ever lower price and maximum power. We tested this new smartphone under the 350€ mark. What's in store for us? (non-sponsored test)

realme continues to bring prices down with a new challenger in the mid-range segment. The GT Master Edition 5G navigates between the mid and high end with many features inherited from the realme GT.

Only its price reminds which range it belongs to. The realme GT Master Edition is sold at €300 during the launch period from September 6 to 12 and then at €349.

Find out what it's worth in our test.

realme GT Master Edition – A tailor-made design

The design of the realme GT Master Edition comes in several versions. We received the Luna White model with a pure line that goes to the essentials.

The texture of the case is reminiscent of the realme X3 Super Zoom. It is smooth and soft to the touch with a satin effect. It marks a little fingerprints. The result is sober and elegant.

The design of the realme GT Master Edition Exporer Gray is more elaborate. Signed by the famous industrial designer Naoto Fukasawa, it invites you to travel. Covered in vegan leather, the smartphone shell reproduces the lines of a suitcase.

Back to our version, the GT Master Edition weighs only 174g. Well balanced, it is pleasant to use with one hand.

The photo module at the back remains discreet. White in color, it blends into the shell. It barely sticks out of the hull which gives it good stability when laid flat.

A word on the protective shell provided in the box. realme has chosen a neutral gray color with patterns that are supposed to represent a suitcase. Covered in Vegan leather with a concave shape, it symbolizes travel.

The box of our test version unfortunately did not contain this very special case.

A 120Hz screen

At the front, the realme GT Master Edition displays a splendid 6.43-inch Super AMOLED screen. Surrounded by very thin edges, the slab covers 91.7% of the front surface.

AMOLED technology lives up to its reputation. It offers a high level of contrast and colors that explode. The level of brightness allows it to be used outdoors and in the sun without any problem.

Another strong point of this screen, it has a refresh rate of 120Hz. You will not need to change the frame rate manually, the smartphone takes care of it on its own.

It has an automatic adjustment mode that adapts the frequency according to the content displayed. It saves battery.

We end this chapter with the fingerprint reader. Placed under the screen, it occupies a large area at the bottom of the smartphone and is easy to reach. This sensor is particularly responsive and unlocks the smartphone with a success rate of around 100%.

Power at your fingertips

The realme GT Master Edition is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 778G 5G processor. More modest than the GT's Snapdragon 888, it is nevertheless capable of impressive feats.

This processor is accompanied by 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, but the GT Master Edition has an additional secret weapon. He knows how to transform part of his ROM into virtual RAM to gain speed.

You can add up to 5GB to the existing 8GB. Thanks to this combination, it manages to run everything you want in good conditions.

The Call of Duty Mobile game launches with the graphics set to the very high level and a high frame rate. You can raise the latter to a very high level, but the smartphone automatically lowers the quality of the graphics.

In any case, the game remains fluid and ultra fast even with a large number of players on the screen.

After a 20-minute game, you feel a slight heating sensation, but nothing to worry about. It doesn't stop you from playing. It has a steam heat dissipation chamber which is very efficient.

65W autonomy and recharge

The realme GT Master Edition has a slightly smaller battery than the GT. It goes from 4500mAh to 4300mAh. The processor being a little less greedy, the autonomy hardly varies.

We sail between a day and a day and a half depending on the use and the activation of the refresh rate in 120Hz.

For example, a 20-minute session of Call of Duty Mobile consumes 6% battery with the screen at 120Hz and the settings on the very high level.

This battery is compatible with SuperDart 65W fast charging. As usual with realme, the plug is in the box. The battery charges at the speed of light. It goes from 0 to 50% in 13 minutes and reaches 100% after 33 minutes.

The photo

The realme GT Master Edition inherits the same set of photo sensors as the GT. This module has a 64MP main camera, an 8MP 119° ultra wide-angle and a 2MP 4cm Macro lens. On the front is a 32MP Sony camera.

You won't be disappointed with the quality of daytime photos. It shoots at 16 or 64MP with consistent rendering and brightness. The colors are vivid without going overboard. (16 and 64MP photos)

Devoid of optical zoom, the smartphone still allows zooms ranging from X2 to X20. Beyond a magnification X2, the loss of details is quickly felt.

When the brightness starts to drop, the realme GT Master Edition shows its limits. In automatic mode, the colors are cold and the camera struggles to mask noise. The Night Mode comes to raise the level a little. It adds a hint of brightness.

The stage is barely brighter. The smartphone tries to warm up the colors but at the same time it deposits a yellow veil on the photo. In its defense, it removes a good part of the noise while maintaining a good level of detail.

The ultra wide-angle renders duller colors and unfortunately it does not avoid the feeling of aspiration in the center.

There are sometimes a few hiccups, but the Portrait mode manages to make complex outlines without overusing the halo blur technique to hide unruly hair. We regret not being able to play with the level of background blur.

If you are a fan of Macro mode, the GT Master Edition is easy to master with a distance of 4 cm.

Instant Street Mode to Play Reporter

realme has added Street Mode to take candid, old-school photos without AI or algorithm assistance. To put ourselves in the shoes of a reporter or a photographer, we access this mode by pressing the volume down button twice when the smartphone is on standby. (16MP photo, in Street Mode and with Street filter)

We arrive directly on the Street mode which offers focal lengths ranging from 16 to 120 mm which correspond to ultra wide-angle, wide-angle, portrait, etc. You can also launch this Street mode in the classic way in the interface. (Street mode photos with different focal lengths)

To complement this Street mode, the camera interface also contains a "Street filter" which simulates the visual rendering of old Kodak cameras as well as other filters which give photos a vintage look. (16MP photo, Street filter and B&W sup filter)

What we think

At only €349, the realme GT Master Edition is a smartphone with excellent value for money. It retains some premium features of the realme GT such as its 120Hz Super AMOLED screen or its 65W fast recharge.

realme has made some concessions on the processor but the GT Master Edition is still a very good low-cost gaming machine. The Snapdragon 888 processor is replaced by a 778G but with use it is difficult to see the difference unless you are permanently connected to a test probe.

It allows you to play in the best conditions at all you want. It also meets all the needs for daily use.

Its photo module is not without reproach, but its 64MP camera tips the balance in its favor and makes it a versatile device.

The realme GT Master Edition is an essential option if you are looking for a smartphone for a budget of less than 350€.

The GT Master Edition 6/128GB is sold at €299 from September 6 to 12 then it goes to €349. The realme GT Master Edition 8/256GB is sold at €399. From September 6 to 12 a pair of Buds Air 2 is offered. Click here
