LinkedIn and Reddit apps caught in the act of clipboard spying 🆕 | iGeneration
After TikTok, it's LinkedIn's turn to announce a change in the operation of its mobile application following the release of the iOS 14 beta. The developer of the portfolio creation portal Urspace has realized that on his iPad Pro running iPadOS 14, the LinkedIn app was frantically copying the contents of his MacBook Pro's clipboard, key after key.
This is a new security feature of iOS/iPadOS 14, which warns via a notification that the application has recovered the contents of the clipboard, whether it is the local clipboard or the one iCloud (read: iOS 14: these new features that protect user privacy). TikTok had been caught red-handed, explaining that the clipboard collection was a measure to fight spam. The app has promised to put an end to this behavior.
Regarding LinkedIn, Erran Berger, the vice president of engineering promised a fix, stating that the application does not store or transmit clipboard content. To ZDnet, a spokesperson confirmed that this was a bug and not intended behavior. With the public beta of iOS 14 expected this month and then the final version this fall, the number of flagged applications is likely to be quite large!
Update — Arf. It's a veritable epidemic of paperweight pumping that we're going to witness throughout the summer! After TikTok and LinkedIn, it's Reddit's turn, caught red-handed, to announce an upcoming update for its mobile app. It also collects clipboard content, as seen in notifications in iOS 14.
An app update is scheduled for July 14.
