More optical audio output on new MacBook Pro [MàJ] |Macgeneration
Macs have been in charge of an optical audio output for over ten years. The jack of the majority of machines sold by Apple served as much analog output, for a helmet for example, as a optical output, for a hifi chain or a home cinema installation.By connecting a Toslink cable to the Jack output, MacOS automatically activates the optical output and transmits digital sound, without going through the internal amplifier.
On the new MacBook Pro, this function has disappeared. The jack maintained on the right side of the machine is a simple analog plug, compatible with all the headphones, helmets and speakers on the market, but it is no longer doubled as optical socket.
If you want a digital outing on these Macs, you will have to buy an additional accessory.Either a USB-C to HDMI adapter to connect to a Home Cinema system, or a USB DAC equipped with an optical output, to be obviously associated with a USB-C to USB adapter.
Update - Appleinsider obtained some additional information from the manufacturer. The withdrawal of the optical exit was motivated by the lack of interest of customers for this functionality. In addition, many USB-C "zero latency" devices incorporating optical audio connectivity are or will be available quickly.
