Design and ergonomics of the ONEPLUS Buds Pro

For its first "pro" headphones, OnePlus largely reworked its recipe. The OnePlus Buds Pro therefore receive a whole new design which, without revolutionizing the small world of True Wireless headphones, still offers some good ideas.

On the packaging side, the first approach is generally satisfactory. There is always a box tinged with red and white - colors of the brand - in which the charging box contains the two headphones sits.Behind the cardboard base that keeps the case, there are several packaging containing the instructions, the various guarantees but also a USB-C charging cable and tips of different sizes to adapt the headphones to your ears.

The ONEPLUS BUDS PRO case offers a form of rectangular case with rounded corners. It is rather compact, light (52 grams in total with the headphones inside), and easily slips into a pants pocket without interfering. The brand logo proudly sits on top of the case, a USB-C port placed at the rear allows it to be recharged, and there is a light diode at the front. The pairing button is placed inside the case, near the headphones.

These offer a “stem” design as we now see in abundance in the world of True Wireless headphones.Nevertheless, OnePlus offered its pro buds a two -color look of the most beautiful effect: chrome on the lower part, and matt plastic on the upper part.Whether it's design itself or finishes, the pro buds offer premium experience.

This design serves product ergonomics. Here, touch control point with erratic functioning as we find in abundance among competitors. With Pro Buds, OnePlus has decided to bet on pressure commands. You just have to pinch the stem of the left earpiece to activate basic controls such as activation of transparency mode or noise reduction via long pressure, reading/pause with simple pressure, next music with double pressure, and return to the previous track with three pressures. In use, it works perfectly well, and we are even entitled to a little haptic return to inform us that the action has been taken into account.

As for the headphones themselves, they are perfectly comfortable. It will be necessary to be done in intra-ear format-condition sine qua not to the presence of an active noise reduction-but the tips designed by OnePlus do not sink into the ear canal to irritate it.With their featherweight of 4.35 grams per listener, they will easily be forgotten in the ears. The ONEPLUS Buds Pro are also IP55 certified, meaning that they can be used perfectly even if it rains slightly or if you sweat during a sports session.

Functions and autonomy

Bluetooth headphones obliges, the ONPLUS BUSS PRO are compatible with any smartphone.Just hold the button located inside the case to activate pairing.Unfortunately, no fast peer, simplified connection protocol with Android smartphones. Here, we take advantage of a homemade solution, allowing you to quickly and automatically connect your headphones to your OnePlus or Oppo smartphone, a little like Apple offers with its AirPods.

Then, the settings of your headphones can be directly modified in the Bluetooth settings of your device. It will nevertheless remain possible to benefit from all the available options, no matter the brand of your smartphone, thanks to the Hememelody application, available both on Android and IOS.

This application allows you not only to personalize the touch controls, know the battery condition of the headphones, make updates, but also to carry out an adjustment test to find the tip size that you best, to the best, the establishment of the Apple Airpods Provods. It is also possible to adjust the level of noise reduction, but we will come back to it in the dedicated part of this test.Note that this application not only manages the headphones of OnePlus, but also those of Oppo, a common parent company obliges.

Via the app, the ONEPLUS BUDS PRO also offer some original and rather interesting features. This is the case, for example, of the personalized audio equalizer allowing to adjust the audio curve according to your hearing sensitivity. The application makes you listen to several sounds to determine your auditory shortcomings, and will compensate them later in a software way by growing or not certain frequencies. The idea is excellent and the result frankly convincing! The OnePlus Buds Pro also offer a mode called Zen Mode Air allowing you to listen to relaxing sounds. This may seem a bit superfluous - this type of sounds being widely available on many platforms - it's always taken and the different pieces offered are quality.

On the autonomy side, OnePlus announces 5:30 am per earphones with the noise reduction started and 7 hours without.By adding the charging box, we will take advantage of almost 38 hours without the ANC and 28 hours without. In fact, we find ourselves more or less, knowing that we have mainly used the headphones with the noise reduction started.Overall, the OnePlus Buds Pro offer very good autonomy, slightly above what can be found in competition, in particular with regard to the case.

Noise reduction and sound quality

The main argument of these Probes Pro Buds compared to the other brand's other headphones, it is obviously the active noise reduction. The firm promises an attenuation of the surrounding sounds up to 40 dB, a simply huge reduction worthy of an anci helmet, and not really headphones. So, do the ONPLUS BUSS PRO hold their promise at this level?

In use - even if we cannot really quantify the real noise reduction in terms of decibels - we note, that indeed, the active noise reduction proposed by the ONEPLUS Buds Pro is excellent. We have made the comparison with pro Airpods - reference in the sector - and the headphones of OnePlus are really better.Faced with a helmet with one of the best noise reductions on the market, the Airpods Max, the ONEPLUS BUDS Pro nevertheless show their limits. But after all, it is clearly not the same size (nor the same price).

Nevertheless, if the surrounding sounds are very largely attenuated, we noted a rather unpleasant background to use.Difficult to describe this slight roar, but, in fact, it really has the impression of "hearing" the ANC in action. At the editorial staff, I had the headphones tested by two other people and none heard this background noise. It will therefore probably depend on your hearing sensitivity. Finally, the OnePlus Buds Pro also offer a "car" mode, leaving the loads to adjust the force of noise reduction automatically according to your environment, but it is unfortunately very gadget and we have noted practically no difference.

Finally, what about sound quality? The OnePlus Buds Pro offer 11 mm speakers capable of delivering a rather ample sound given the size of the headphones, and they use the AAC and SBC codecs.Classic.The sound is generally rather balanced, even if the bass can sometimes seem a little soft.By listening to several different styles of music, we found that the pro Buds were getting better out in rock or classic registers and some pop songs, less in very busy registers like modern hip-hop.Finally, the sound delivered by integrated microphones - three in number - was very correct. In any case, my interlocutors have never complained, quite the contrary.
