In order to further enlarge its range of entry -levels, Oppo presents this Oppo A54 5G marketed around 250 euros on the manufacturer's website.Taking up the same codes as his big brother the Oppo A74 5G.It is placed in the 5G smartphone range with correct power at very reasonable prices.

Design

The Oppo A54 5G is clearly the little brother of the Oppo A74 5G.Nor is it in originality, that is to say that it takes up all the aesthetic codes of Android phones and especially the Oppo A74 5G.A large screen 6.5 inches that protrudes from the device, a glass back with a shades of gray and steel contours in the same range of colors as the back.As a general rule, there is a smartphone with a manufacturing quality worthy of a good mid -range.

The whole design clearly does not think about a cheap smartphone that some entry -level devices may suggest. However, we notice the same thickness as the Oppo A74 5G, that is to say 84 mm thick. It's a bit thick, but classic for an entry -level smartphone, it's still 0.75 mm more than an iPhone 13 Pro Max.

We will quickly see the general design of the Oppo A54 5G starting with the front side on which we find the predominant screen, which occupies 90.5% of the area of the device. On the upper left is the front camera. The latter is however quite large, where competitors like Xiaomi offer a little smaller front cameras.

On the lower part of the smartphone, there is a really prominent chin, even a little too much for a 2021 smartphone.Certainly we are on a smartphone more or less 259.90 euros, so you have to expect not to have the most borderless phone of the moment. It makes a big black space below, which is not used for much.

The other edges of the screen are 1.90 mm thick, it is these edges that add the immersion effect of the screen by their finesse.

To continue detailing the device, we will talk about the lower edge.We find, the USB-C port for recharge and OTG, the microphone for calls, the speaker for musical listening and the Jack port to connect a helmet or wired headphones.

Now let's go to the left side of the device. We find there the two volume buttons, independent as well as the SIM drawer of the device. The buttons are very elongated and fine, 1.36 mm thick. This strengthens fluid smartphone curves in general. We find a rather wide speaker, located between the screen and the chassis of the device.

On the right side, there is only one button, finally classic, it is the telephone unlocking button on the phone. On this button, we find the fingerprint sensor. This is a shame that it is not under the screen, but only an AMOLED slab is compatible with a fingerprint sensor under the screen. There is an advantage to this, it is that unlocking is done faster than on a sensor under the screen and that it is possible to unlock your smartphone without turning on the screen.

Personally using an iPhone for a few years, I like this button configuration and seems to me the best for a pleasant grip and ergonomics worthy of a high -end smartphone.

The back of the device is a little grayed black, a kind of gradient fairly discreet, we find the logo of the marks the part at the bottom right and a lot of other certifications on the device. The photo module is also present with four photo sensors and a flash, and a mention "48 Mp AI Cam", which seems present just to occupy the black space between the flash and the photo sensor at the top right of the module.

Speaking of the photo module, it comes out of the smartphone, for a maximum thickness of 10.43 mm.Which therefore makes a photo module which exceeds 2.3 mm.It is very prominent and it naturally swung the device when using a flat surface.

Overall, the Oppo A54 5G is a beautiful smartphone with beautiful finishes and well designed. We only regret a few choices from Oppo on the chin of the device for example and the front camera with a slightly high diameter.

Performance

The Oppo A54 5G has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 480 processor, as is its big brother the Oppo A74 5G at 50 euros more.It is a fairly entry -level sock model, but which supports 5G however. It is an 8 core chip clocked with 2 GHz, and engraved in 8 Nm.On the RAM side, here we have 4 GB of RAM in LPDDR4X, which is quite classic, but a little light on smartphones in this category, the RAM is clocked at 2133 MHz, it is not too bad either.

In terms of storage, we are on USF 2.1, it's correct, but we will have preferred to have USF 2.2, but it is not the choice of the manufacturer and it is a shame. Finally, the GPU is an Adreno 619, a model from Qualcomm ideal for devices in this price range. So we have all the elements to correctly run an entry -level smartphone.

Geekbench Oppo A54 5G

Geekbench focuses on processor performance. The geekbench score of the Oppo A54 5G is 1626 points. This score is the result in multi-core of course, the single-core result is 522 points. It's really very correct and we don't expect really more from a Snapdragon 480 indeed, which must manage 5G in addition to that.

Quite honestly on the Oppo A74 5G we could have expected that Oppo will put a fierce soccer, but in the Oppo A54 5G offers less than 250 euros more than correct performance. This is one of the Oppo with a good performance/price ratio.

Oppo A54 5G performancetest

On the RAM side, we have 4 GB of memory in LPDDR4X, which is rather low for an Android smartphone, and we have 2301 MB/s of reading flows and 1446 MB/s in writing and 32.8 nanoseconds of latency.Clearly correct writing speeds for a smartphone in this range and the 34.2 ns of latency, are happy to see for the price. The overall memory score is more than correct overall.

For the performance of the storage system, there are flowers of 316 MB/s in reading and 232 MB/s in writing.Once again we cannot really be disappointed with reading in reading, nor even in writing.

3dmark of the Oppo A54 5G

On the graphic performance side, the Adreno 619 is not a war machine, however it succeeds in beautiful things to play quietly on games not too greedy. After doing all the benchmarks of the 3DMARK application, here is what it gives:

Indeed, we see that faced with other more efficient and more expensive smartphones, it is done small, but facing the Oppo A74 5G, it exceeds it on a certain benchmark. Both consist of the same SOCs and even characteristic, so it is natural to have the same performances. In addition, Vulkan architecture is always excellent and allows good results where OpenGL has more and more trouble.

Screen

In terms of the screen we do not find an Amoled slab, as we can find on the Redmi Note 10s which is sold around 200 euros too, or even OLED.Nevertheless, the LDC slab of the Oppo A54 5G is excellent, it also has the attention to offer us a refresh rate of 90 Hz.It is a respectable choice of the brand that prefers to offer a 90 Hzc screen in LDC that 60 Hz in AMOLED.

Unlike the OLED tiles, which to display deep blacks, extinguishes its LEDs.The LCD slab will not be completely black, because no extins pixels, we will always find a black light that will pass.

Physically the screen is flat, Oppo did not choose a curved screen, to the delight of users. The curved screen is for me a disaster in use, certainly it makes the phone ultra-borderless but prevents a good grip.A flat screen is more pleasant on an LDC slab than on an Amoled or Oled slab.

In terms of screen size, the Oppo A54 5G offers a 6.48 -inch screen at the 20: 9 ratio and with a resolution still as classic, Full HD+ namely 2400 x 1080 pixels. It’s quite standard on a lot of smartphones, entry -level or slightly higher -end.This gives us a density of 405 pixels per inch, which is still far beyond the limit discernible by the human eye.

However, we take advantage of a fairly high brightness for an LCD screen, namely 480 nits in typical and 550 nits maximum, which is good. But it remains weak for use in full sun.You will easily lack light for external use. However for GPS in the car, or respond to messages in a park is enough.

What I appreciate with LCD screens, when they are as good as the one on this device is that they are quite soft. The slab is very well mastered and is still topical in 2021.This makes me think strongly of Apple's mastery with its LDC screen on its iPhone XR for example. We never find tones that flashed more than others or who hurt the eyes.Of course provided you use the brightness normally of course and not to push it as much as possible without valid reason. In any case, the latter is automatically adjusted.

It is possible to adjust only the color temperature, but not the colorimetric profile. In itself, it is not very serious, however, at least we avoid doing anything, because in my eyes, the colors are already very well configured as well and we do not really need to touch the more settingsthat. The screen is very well calibrated, it is a beautiful mastery that Oppo offers us.

An interesting mode for biggest phone users, eye comfort mode. This mode allows you to simply yellow the screen to send less blue light, harmful for long use.I do not appreciate this feature, however, on any smartphone or device that I use.Dark mode is much more effective not to tire your eyes too much. There is also the possibility of putting blue anti-light glasses in order to protect your eyes as much as possible.

Camera

The Oppo A54 5G has a camera with four sensors. The first, a 48 MP main sensor, allows you to take beautiful photos. However, not all photos are taken in basic 48 MP but in 12 MP only, you have to activate 48 MP mode to really take the photos in 48 megapixels and enjoy a very high resolution.

We find with, a wide angle sensor, a monochrome sensor and a macro sensor, without much use in my eyes for the latter but why not, it is fashion for all manufacturers. Here is how the sensors of the Oppo A54 are distributed:

ObjectifCapteur principalGrand-angleCapteur macroCapteur monochrome
Réolution48 MP8 MP2 MP2 MP
Ouverturef/1,7f/2,2f/2,4f/2,4
Angle79°119°88,8°88,8°

By default, the photos taken with a resolution of 12 Mp are between 3 and 6 MB, on average. It all depends on the color concentration that we find in each photo. It is possible to use the following modes to capture your favorite moments with the Oppo A54:

Extra-HD mode takes photos in 108 MP, which allows you to have a very high pixel density. In itself, it is used to take pictures of a really precise object, to zoom on it then.He actually takes several photos which he then combines, because the smartphone does not have a 108 MP sensor. It is different from 48 MP mode to use full performance of the sensor.

Automatic photo

In daily use, it is correct. The photos are not ugly, s far from it, but we see that the time influences the quality of the photos, as well as the quality of the lighting.Indeed, we notice here that the counter-days are not too badly managed, but we see however that the smartphone has a little trouble.Likewise for photos in shaded places, it tends not to be optimal in any situation.

If not for the rest, the colors are correct, although not extravagant, they are not retouched with an artificial intelligence too artificial precisely. This is a good thing.

Zoom

Oppo does not offer zoom x0.5 but x0.6 with its A54 5G.This can be understood, a sensor with a wider angle costs more. However, you can only zoom in with the device with the device, which is quite unfortunate. On paper, it's a shame but in the reality of the facts, after reflection, it is a good thing.

x0,6
x1
x2
x2

The smartphone offers so pixelated photos and so let's say it, ugly in maximum zoom that you should not try the devil better by offering an X10 zoom. All this is a software processing most certainly because I found smartphones with the same sensor that did better.

Night photo

We notice the difference which is clearly visible between activation of the night mode and its non-activation.Indeed, in the left photo, the night mode is not activated, I took a photo with the classic automatic mode. However, in the right photo, it is activated. We notice two things.First of all, we see more details on the photo on the right, with the activated night mode and a longer exposure.

On the other hand, what bothers me with it is the amount of grain that it generates. While the automatic mode offers a photo that is much darker, but of better quality, the night mode does not care about the grain. The photo is indeed brighter, but not of breathtaking quality.

Front camera

The front camera of the device has a portrait mode, as on many smartphones today. It allows you to manage the portrait mode on your own, without the need for another front camera with it to generate the background blur in a software way.

The front camera offers good photos, on the other hand I would have enjoyed a little more sharpness and accuracy of colors. Here, my polo shirt seems to be black when it was certainly, dark blue, but not at the level which is noticeable in these photos.

Interface

We always appreciate the coloros interface, the software overlay from Oppo as much. However, it will be noted that no manufacturer makes Samsung's efforts to offer a really pure and specific interface to itself.Indeed, telephone and messaging applications are those of Google and not that of Oppo.We find YouTube in the Google folder with other applications and we use Google Agenda as a daily monitoring.

Fortunately, the photos are not dependent on Google Photos, as Sony or Motorola can do.Oppo still offers some personalizations, such as the application drawer which is no longer there in all manufacturers at least by default, as well as the search function in the smartphone, present at Samsung, Huawei and obviously Apple which becomes theReference of this function.

The Coloros 11 interface is still as pleasant to use, but we would have appreciated even more changes in Android from Oppo.A less dependence on Google applications would also be a real plus in the future, owner applications allow you to make a unified interface on the smartphone and are much more pleasant to use.More owner application for a more advanced ecosystem.

Overall the interface is fluid, even very fluid. The animations are correct coupled on the 90 Hz screen, the rendering is excellent.

Sound quality

As for the sound quality of the Oppo A54 5G, there is a smartphone with the low speaker only used for music.I am not really surprised coming from a phone sold at 259.90 euros.Smartphones with stereo speakers are rare enough on this segment not to say totally non-existent.Pass the 450-500 euros mark to have a stereo sound.Technically we can count on the fact that we can offer good sound quality with a mono speaker.

The audio quality of the Oppo A54 5G speaker is not the most satisfactory. We would have really enjoyed a much better speaker than this one, which is not at the top.The sound is very very strong, but the quality is disappointing. The bass is practically nonexistent, the mediums are not bad very frankly despite a little visible presence. We would have liked more present mediums in all the music listened to with this Oppo A54 5G.

On the other hand, the treble are present, even too present. The treble takes over too much and become brittle for the ears.Technically the speakers of a smartphone and even more of an entry-level smartphone are not made for musical listening.

The sound that is produced is aggressive and does not correspond to what I expected from a device sold around 250 euros. It's a shame, but that's how it is.Fortunately, the smartphone has a jack allowing to connect a helmet or headphones. It is also equipped with Bluetooth 5.1 offering good audio reproduction of very good quality wireless. Here is the list of codecs supported:

Advertisement. Scroll to continue reading.

These are the most common codecs that the Oppo A54 5G supports. Thanks to this he gives a warranty on the different uses that you can have with this smartphone.

Lock and safety

Practically 100% of current smartphones even at entry levels have a facial recognition system and a fingerprint sensor.Let's start with the fingerprint sensor found on the device lock button.

It allows you to quickly unlock the smartphone and even without taking care to turn on the screen beforehand. The idea of physical fingerprint sensors in the locking / unlock button works very well and is perhaps more relevant than the fingerprint sensor under the screen.

As for the facial recognition of the OPPO A54 5G.The latter is operational thanks to the front camera of the device in a software manner. No 3D recognition is carried out as with an ID face on iPhone. However, the system works well, but does not effectively protect.

It is possible in the device settings to choose to unlock only when the eyes are open or not, which will prevent other people from unlocking your smartphone without your knowledge. However, they will be able to do it via a beautiful photo of you with your visible face, it's perfectly doable and it even works very well. This is indeed the defect of almost all systems of this kind on Android.

Advertisement. Scroll to continue reading.

Unfortunately, it is possible to set up a parameter so that full light is not activated at night to detect your face. This option that Oppo calls "auto brightness", fortunately, this option is actuable, to avoid attacking your eyes in the middle of the night.Because if I said that the colors of the screen are not aggressive, at night with the maximum brightness, any screen attacks the eyes.

You always have the unlocking function using a 4 -digit code, or 4 to 16 digit or alphanumeric characters, if you want to stay on reliable safety in a certain way.

Connectivity

In terms of connectivity, the OPPO A54 5G benefits from some of the last technological novelties. That is to say that we have a 5G chip available in this device. Here is the list of cell bands with which the Oppo A74 5G is compatible with:

2G1, 3, 5, 8
3G1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 8, 19
4G1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 12, 17, 18, 19, 20, 26, 28, 38, 39, 40, 41, 66
5G1, 3, 5, 7, 8, 20, 28, 38, 40, 41, 77, 78

Unfortunately we do not find Wi-Fi 6 in this Oppo A54 5G, this better wireless connectivity at home is still reserved for high-end devices, which is a shame. On retrouve quand même les normes Wi-Fi &/g/b/n/ac, sans débits extraordinaires.

Advertisement. Scroll to continue reading.

We have good performance thanks to Wi-Fi 5, which is not completely exceeded either. We have thanks to the Asus XT-8 which is a basic Wi-Fi Wi-Fi router, but which sends more than correct scores in Wi-Fi 5.

For the rest of the connectivity, we obviously have NFC, allowing to connect speakers or helmets and any other object in record time.If however you do not have NFC on the object to connect, you can also connect it in Bluetooth with a SoC supporting Bluetooth 5.1.

Wired level, there is obviously a USB-C port, but also a Jack port.It is practically compulsory that entry and mid -range smartphones keep this connection which is obviously too exceeded for higher -end devices. However, we appreciate being able to connect a wired helmet or wired headphones on your smartphone without buying a Bluetooth pair.

Autonomy

Many smartphones, entry -level, benefit from a large capacity battery. The device has a battery with a capacity of 5000 mAh, which is relatively classic in the world of smartphones at less than 350 euros.

Advertisement. Scroll to continue reading.

It is clear that it is necessary to compensate for performance that is not at the top by other more interesting features. For good reason, the autonomy of the device is interesting since it allows to last a lot of time without recharging it.

Of course, the more you use your smartphone, the more independent it will lose. That is to say that if you take a lot of photos, a connection sharing to your computer throughout your class day and that in the evening you call your girlfriend for 4 hours, necessarily, the autonomy will meltTo "only" a good day, as you play on your smartphone in addition.

To recharge the device, the manufacturer provides a 10 Watts charger, which seems to be little given the size of the battery and what some other manufacturers like Xiaomi offer.Especially since the Oppo A54 5G takes charge of 18 watts. It's a shame and that's where Oppo saves money compared to his big brother the Oppo A74 5G.

But in both cases we could have expected a 30 watt load in view of the battery size.Very frankly a shame, especially for this manufacturer.
