The paralympic games maintained despite the increase in COVID-19 cases
The Paralympic Games will be held from August 24 to September 5 in Tokyo. With this in mind, Andrew Parsons, the head of the International Paralympic Committee, arrived in Japan on Monday. He immediately held a meeting to decide on the measures to be adopted to ensure safe gaming.
These will use the same health protocols as the Olympic Games. They will take place mainly without spectators and will limit the interactions of the people involved (athletes, staff, judges, etc.) with the population.
During an intervention on Friday, Andrew Parsons said: "While it is encouraging to see that the Olympic Games have been held safely and successfully, participants in the Paralympic Games must not rest on their laurels". So no slacking off for the teams and volunteers who will be working over the next few weeks in contact with some 4,400 athletes who have come to compete for a medal.
Recall that Tokyo is still under a state of emergency and that COVID-19 positive cases are on the rise. Week after week the capital is indeed breaking records, the number of new infections per day having increased from around 4,000 at the start of the Olympics to 17,900 today (we can however note that the number of deaths remains stable).
