The small lines of the new Magsafe external battery: operation, capacity, reversed recharge… |igeneration
The Magsafe external battery that Apple launched today is very different from the previous models that coated the smartphone (read our preview of the Smart Battery Case for iPhone 11).
Thanks to the magsafe magnets, the module is magnetized on the back of the iPhone 12, whether it is equipped with a case or not (as long as it is a Magsafe case, of course).During the use of the external battery, Apple specifies in an assistance sheet not yet translated in French that it will be better to remove the cards carried by the case, if this is the case. The manufacturer also warns that the external battery is likely to mark the leather cases: "This is normal, but if that concerns you, we suggest using a case that is not in leather".
To preserve the longevity of its battery, the accessory incorporates a load management function when it is connected to a power source for a long time. The lifespan of a battery which remains too long connected to the current can decline more quickly.
This function reduces the battery capacity when it detects such a situation, and the battery level indicator displays a percentage of load which reflects the adjustment of this maximum capacity. This will return to its unresolved level when the battery is no longer connected to the current for a long time "and the conditions and the state of the battery allow it".
Before its first use, Apple requests to recharge the accessory with a Lightning cable and an AC adapter at least 20 W like the one sold by the apple, knowing that the manufacturer delivers the bare external battery, without adapter or cable.Use a charger of less than 20 W will slow down the load;On the other hand, using a 27 W adapter will speed up the battery recharge.
Once on the back of the iPhone, the external battery will fill the battery at a speed of 5 W. If the accessory is connected to the sector with a 20 W adapter (or more), the charging power will be 15W, the Magsafe full pot.
If the external battery and the iPhone need juice, it is possible to recharge them at the same time. You must first connect the two of course, then:
You should know that in these two configurations, it is the iPhone which has the primeur of recharge, the smartphone "will share" the juice once arrived at 80% of its capacity. If ever a notification is displayed that the smartphone will only recharge 90%, you must open the control center, maintain the energy saving button and touch Continue.
The Magsafe external battery is sold for € 109 and the first deliveries will take place between July 22 and 26.To be able to use it, the iPhone will have to work under iOS 14.7, which is also offered to developers in the form of a candidate release since this evening.
We will have the opportunity to come back of course, we will see on this occasion if this Magsafe battery is better done than that which we had tested in March (Read: test of an external battery compatible Magsafe for iPhone 12: afalse good idea?).
