The state of national disaster decreed following bad weather
The conditions are met to decree the state of national claims following the bad weather in recent days according to the Council of Ministers yesterday. The latest provisional assessment mentioned by the National Risk Management and Disaster Office (BNGRC) reports in particular 48 deaths through Madagascar and 129,715 victims from 25,973 households.Over 55,300 of them are still placed in around 90 accommodation sites, scattered in the four corners of the island.
The situation is still worrying. The heavy rains that fell in the capital on the night of January 17 flooded several districts in the capital. It has worsened following the passage of a tropical disturbance which crossed the island from east to west bringing more rains and causing significant damage and losses of life in at least 7 regions of Madagascar.
The situation is more serious than you think, explained yesterday, the director general of the BNGRC, General Elack Olivier, on the sidelines of the reception of donations for the victims in Antanimora. It would take approximately a month to see the waters completely withdraw from certain districts and problems of water evacuation and the obstructed canals not helping.
Technically, the Plaine of Antananarivo would be at the same level and any attempted water pumping to see them would remove them would be in vain. This is the reason why pumping work would have been suspended in certain places. The victims will have to take their pain in patience, but the state would also focus on the allocation of housing to the victims of the floods.A rehousing strategy would currently be concocted in this sense.
In the meantime, the victims will benefit from a safety net announces the authorities.A fund intended for loss situations granted before by the World Bank will be mobilized to finance this.It would still be $ 35 million to use in this fund and its release must comply with international financing standards.
