Wireless or wired PS5 headset?

Choosing a good headset for your PlayStation 5 is a little more complicated than on PC. Distance requires, a wireless connection will be much more comfortable. Two solutions are then possible: connect a wired headset to your controller or acquire a dedicated wireless headset compatible with Sony consoles.

The know-how of the Japanese brand in audio is not to be demonstrated and it is logical that the brand offers a new headset to accompany the release of its console. The design will come as a bit of a surprise and the plastics could have been of better quality, but the device is generally solid.

More surprisingly, Sony has chosen a non-adjustable headband and relies only on the headband to adapt it to its skull. In practice, the system works quite well and the helmet does not weigh too much on the skull. Overall comfortable, the ear cups are on the other hand quite small, a point to remember if you have large ears. Last detail: the foams are not replaceable, which will logically impact the durability of the machine.

Charging is done via USB-C and there are a few essential buttons on the edge (volume, mute, etc.) as well as a jack connector that allows you to use the headphones wired. The wireless link logically passes through a dongle and is flawless.

The sound reproduction leaves us more divided, without being bad, it lacks a bit of precision and we have seen better traditional headphones at this price level. The microphones integrated into the helmet are however very satisfactory, the voice is clear and the background noises are well erased. The 12-hour battery life, however, leaves us a little unsatisfied, especially given the fairly slow charge.

Finally, the Pulse 3D is a satisfactory entry-level headset and we are curious to see if Sony will offer a more ambitious version. You can find more details in our complete test.

We're not going to lie to each other, on this generation of consoles, SteelSeries has hit hard with its Arctis 7P (and 7X for Xbox players). It takes up the outline of the Arctis 7 which it replaces; we therefore find a comfortable circumaural helmet thanks to a fabric headband which limits the pressure on the skull while ensuring good support.

The headset surprises with its sonic precision. If the basses are present, they are much less overrepresented than on the average for products in the sector. For its part, the microphone is effective, we will not record a song on it, but to play, it's more than enough. Autonomy level, nothing to complain about: it lasts 24 hours on a charge.

But where the headset stands out the most is in its use of a USB-C dongle for 2.4GHz connectivity. The latter is compatible with PS4 and PS5, but also with PC, Switch and Android smartphones! An input jack is always there in case of emergency.

In short, SteelSeries offers a great quality and very versatile wireless headset here. A real favorite !

With the Pro X Wireless, Logitech ditches the 100% plastic construction of its previous headsets and uses metal for the ear cups and the headband. The result is a sober, solid and even rather pretty helmet in general.

It is also a comfort model, with a finely adjustable headband and thick foam padding. We also recommend that you use the velvet ones that your ears do not heat up too much. The left earpiece houses a USB-C connector for charging, a volume wheel and a switch for the microphone completes the whole thing. Too bad Logitech skipped the jack connector. Autonomy is solid, count 24 hours on a charge.

Sound-wise, it's very satisfying. The two 50 mm transducers do a good job of reproduction, with the added bonus of excellent stereo rendering.

Are you one of those who are too lazy to recharge their devices after use? This GSP 370, with its hundred hours of autonomy, is there for you. This helmet with a particularly discreet design, however, has more going for it than its endurance. It is indeed very comfortable, even if given the price level we would have liked the headband to be a little more adjustable.

From a sonic point of view, this headset stands out from the crowd with its detailed and very balanced rendering. Whether gaming, watching a movie, or even listening to music, the GSP 370 is always at home. The headphones are of a closed design and therefore very isolating, something to consider if you need to be able to hear what's going on around you.

The unidirectional microphone is of very good quality and they did not manage to fault me.

The GSP 370 is therefore one of our favorite wireless headphones. The only real weakness from our point of view: it does not have a jack input, which costs it versatility.

If the budget is not really a criterion for you, this helmet may hold your attention. The Arctis Pro Wireless has the particularity of having been designed as a “universal” headset as comfortable in game as for listening to music on your phone.

To achieve this result it is Bluetooth compatible, but also has a real external DAC that you can connect via USB to your console or to a PC. Bulkier than the classic dongle, this box is however more versatile with its jack and optical input. Unlike the vast majority of headsets, this model has a removable battery. Two batteries each holding a dozen hours are delivered and the DAC acts as a charging dock. If you remember to put the empty battery back in, you will therefore never run out of fuel.

The headset itself adopts a circum-aural design and a fabric headband. Very comfortable in the living room, the latter however lacks a little holding in activity. So you won't be running with it. The pads are very comfortable and let the air pass well, an important point for a closed helmet. The microphone is hidden almost entirely in the helmet, so you won't look ridiculous using it in the street.

In terms of audio, the record is generally good. It imposes itself without too many worries as one of the best gaming headsets of the moment does not blush when used to listen to music. Despite our fears given its small size, the microphone does a good job of picking up.

Although expensive, the Arctis Pro Wireless is one of the few headsets that can claim to be near universal. If you juggle between different devices, it can therefore be a good choice.

What to know before buying a PS5 or PS4 headset

Which wireless to choose?

If you want to avoid having a cable crossing the living room, there are two solutions: connect a wired headset to your controller or acquire a wireless headset dedicated to consoles.

The first choice is the easiest to set up and works with any pair of headphones that have a 3.5mm jack. Unfortunately, this solution suffers from a major flaw: the codecs used are of low quality and compress the sound. The latter even goes mono when using the microphone! It is therefore a good backup solution, but far from ideal for enjoying the best possible audio quality.

For this, it will therefore be necessary to move towards a PlayStation 4 or PlayStation 5 compatible wireless headset. These use the 2.4 GHz radio band, to guarantee both minimum latency and good quality in all circumstances.

This band is not natively supported by the PlayStation, it will therefore be necessary to connect an adapter to the console, most often in the form of a USB dongle, to ensure the connection.

Why don't we use Bluetooth?

One might wonder why this ubiquitous wireless protocol on our phones and other mobile devices isn't supported on the PlayStation. The answer is simple: the technology is not well suited to gaming. The reason: a lag between sound and image that is far too great and a generally unreliable signal. And as a bonus, the sound quality deteriorates sharply when using the microphone.

Does 3D sound work on my headphones?

Highly promoted by Sony, 3D sound is a 100% software function. It can therefore be used with any helmet as long as the latter is capable of retranscribing stereo. This therefore excludes headsets with a single earpiece. Note that this remains a PS5 exclusive and a 3D sound compatible headset will not offer this option when connected to your PS4.

Will a PS4 headset be PS5 compatible?

Compatibility between accessories of different generations of consoles is always something risky. Fortunately, the transition between PS4 and PS5 will be easy since PS4 compatible headsets are compatible with PS5. So no need to go back to checkout if you are already equipped.

A notable exception, however: wireless headsets using a base connected via an optical cable (S / PDIF). The PS5 has abandoned this connection and the existing systems are therefore no longer compatible.

If you were hoping to use the same wireless headset with an Xbox and a PlayStation: that is currently not possible. No model is currently certified for both platforms. You can therefore at best connect the headphones in wired mode to the controller, with the loss of quality that this implies.
