Windows 11: it will be possible to install APKs of Android applications directly

Windows 11 will offer to install applications from the Amazon App Store. It will also be possible to sideload applications from the APK format directly.

This is one of the great new features of the system: Android applications can be installed and run natively on Windows 11. Microsoft has developed an Android subsystem for Windows 11, similar to what is done for integration of Linux, using Intel Bridge technology. Fortunately, Android applications will also be compatible with AMD and Qualcomm.

To download and install Android applications on Windows 11, the easiest solution will be to go through the Microsoft Store which will actually host the Amazon App Store. It is the largest alternative application store to the Google Play Store.

APK sideload also offered

If you don't want to use the Amazon App Store or are already used to using APKs to install your apps, good news, it will be possible on Windows 11.

Windows 11 : il sera possible d’installer des APK d’applications Android directement

This is Miguel de Icaza, engineer at Microsoft and creator of the GNOME, Mono and Xamarin projects, who confirmed it on Twitter. .APK files will be managed by Windows 11 and installable easily. APK files are very well known to Android users: they are the name of the installation packages for applications intended for the system.

It remains to be seen how this will all work. If an app asks for Google Play Services, which won't be integrated into Windows, how will it respond? Did Microsoft provide a warning message to help the user understand the problem? We will have to wait to test all this in the Windows 11 Insider program to find out.

Installing APKs manually is very good news, it also means that it will be possible to use other alternative stores like F-Droid, if you want to avoid Amazon.
